Couldn’t put it down the night I started reading it and was halfway through before I was forced to turn out the light for the night… Some twists and turns, along with running of the bulls, and you have a very satisfactory conclusion to this book.
Meyer’s astutely unique eye for detail brings the world (I should say, worlds) of this tale into sharp focus, not only in his descriptions of locales and settings, but also in his protagonist’s reactions to new experiences as he doggedly searches for his lost love.
“Bulls, Bands, and London” is an action packed, fun filled fictional travel memoir… I particularly enjoyed Neil’s first person travelogues, light-hearted and humorous history lessons, fun guided tour of tourist highlights…
I was surprised how much i enjoyed this novel!… The author sets up an engaging story about the impulsiveness of love, and wraps it in an adventure that takes us to London and then the running of the bulls. Meanwhile, we learn some quirky things about the history of London (and living in London for 4 years, even things that I found amusing).
“Bulls, Bands, and London” is so different from typical fiction. Casual and easy to read…like I was talking to a friend. It has it all: romance, travel, wit, culture, including some heart pumping excitement with the Running of the Bulls. And half the fun is all the anticipation! But does he get the girl? And is she even right for him? Despite all the angst, there is something romantic about just going for it! Would totally recommend!!
What I find the most fun about John’s books is the way that they interweave fiction with fact, along with some often amusing and always enlightening historical facts. During Neil’s stay in London, I managed to get some good lessons (never preachy-teachy, always entertaining) on Admiral Nelson, assorted castles and such, without the flow ever being disturbed. I loved that part. Highly recommend for fiction and travel lovers alike.
I loved this book. The characters are well developed yet not at all typical, and I never really knew what the outcome was going to be. The voice of the narrator, Neil, is still in my head. He is so well written and fleshed out I feel like I know him and his innermost thoughts. He is witty, charming, and disarmingly frank. I was thoroughly on board with his journey…
